On 4 February 2010 a planning application was lodged with Kildare County Council for developments including a proposal for

A Major Road Bridge at Castletown Gates

This proposal by Devondale Developments follows the withdrawal of the original application for a major ‘town centre’ development, (for a mixed use, large-scale, commercial, high-rise development). Following hundreds of objections this application was withdrawn in February 2009.

This new application can be seen as a revival of those plans as the proposed bridge and infrastructure are intended to facilitate a new town centre, whose details are not part of this application.

Such a bridge would result in serious consequences for Celbridge as a whole and in particular would impact negatively on Castletown residents as follows:

·       Major traffic flow (four lane) past the gates over the proposed bridge. At the risk of stating the obvious, we need less traffic on that already over-congested main street access, not more.

·       The destruction of the rural setting of Castletown Gates and Christ Church and the uniquely unspoilt amenity of Castletown and its walks.

·       The ‘thin-end-of-the wedge’; such a bridge would be a stepping stone towards the creation of an as-yet-unspecified ‘town centre’, most likely a variation on the previous high-rise, concrete jungle.

To object to this application, please write to:

The Planning Department, Kildare County Council, Aras Cill Dara, Naas, Co. Kildare, to arrive by 5 pm on Tuesday 16th March and quoting Planning Ref. no. 09/665, and including €20 fee (if you have not objected under this reference before, that is, the original town centre application).

Winter 2009

Tidy Estates 2009
Glad to say that this year we jumped up to mid table in the 'older estates' category as opposed to 2nd from last in the whole of Celbridge last year !
Note was made of the effort in planting and effort put in, however, it was noted that kerbsides outside of peoples houses needed to be tended and that some 'further reaches' of the estate were littered.
We applaud the efforts of those who put in their time and effort and look forward to further improvements this year.
We would ask everyone to once and a while give the area outside their own house a going over - this would help HUGELY in the overall perception of our estate.
We will continue to have clean up days and if you see a group of 'dishevelled' individuals sweeping and pruning - it's us - so join in !!!

Autumn 2009

Back lot areas ;
This autumn we have undertaken a 'pilot project' on the Coppins backlot area. We are undertaking this as an interim measure due to the numerous concerns voiced to us through the year about these areas.
On inspection, they are being used as rubbish tips, hang out areas and are in a dreadful state, not least in terms of vermin. We are in the process of tackling the Coppins backlott to clean it up from rubbish, dumped dog faeces and grass / hedge cuttings which had literally built up into small hills ! The whole area was utterly disgusting and was a risk in terms of Health and Safety. We understand that there will be concerns by those adjoining these areas that by clearing them up, that it will attract different problems. To this end, we are intent on securing these areas as much as possible. When the KCC find and act upon the solutions that they propose for these areas - they can take over.

Please bear with us in our endevours to address this problem. It may not be what everyone thinks is the solution, but as we have found, there is not going to be a quick and definitive answer to this coming from 'any other' source in the very near future. We can not live in the environs of such rubbish tips and health hazzards. A brief summary of what we have been finding dumped in the backlott areas is ;
buckets of animal faeces, domestic rubbish, mattresses, commercial business signs, cans, beer bottles, condoms, rotting smelly grass and hedge cuttings, motor parts, rubble and the list goes on and on. For the Coppins ( small backlott ) - two builders skips, spraying, Mini digger x 2 trips and many voluntary man hours later, it is still not finished - that's how bad these areas are !

Speeding

The gardi have informed us that they will be operating speeding guns in the estate from November '09 rembember the speed limit is 30km

We have been in continuous contact with the Gardai and KCC in relation to this issue. KCC's responses have been to the effect primarily that budget would be the big issue with regard to any proposal of speed ramps. We have asked for an answer as to whether it would be possible that if a whole estate survey showed majority wish for ramps, that if we paid for them, would KCC install them. We are awaiting an answer. In the meantime, we have continued to liaise with Celbridge Gardai. They have been most aware of this issue and as at end of september, we have been informed that previous technical issues have now been resolved and speed cameras will soon be in operation - you Have been Warned !

We will as always be asking for new people who may have specific interest areas to come on board - especially in the "gardening" aspect.

To avoid "dragging on" we will be trying to keep things moving along we will try keep reports concise, allow time for some questions but may have to defer heavier items till the end.

Spring 2009

This year we have changed our contract for the maintenance of the Open Space areas. The new contract will cover more strimming around bases of trees, edging at walls and spraying of edges of grass areas.
We are also planting at the bases of the trees at both entrances to hopefully add that splash of colour and make our entrances more attractive.
We undertook to completely clean up Lady Louisa's Temple ( arch ) in the Walled Gardens. It's incredible that in this one small area we filled a complete builders skip and approximately 25 large black refuse sacks with rubbish - everything ranging from the obvious ( unfortunately ) beer cans to items of underwear ! to tins of pet food ! We hope that this area will remain clear and clean. To this end, the KCC have undertaken to section it off in order to preserve. An engineers survey has been completed on this and the pedestrain arch into the Walled Gardens with regard to the most appropriate course of repair to be undertaken.
Glad to see that the daffodils we planted last year all made a return visit ! Although they don't last for too long, we believe they do play their part.
On the more unseen level there has been a whole host of discussion / negotiation / correspondence between us and the OPW, KCC with regard to planning issues, Castletown Woods and access with specific reference to the decision that OPW will undertake to maintain this area on behalf of KCC. Plans in this regard as discussed at last year's AGM include the fencing off of this area with gated access for pedestrians in order to secure the area and make safe from anti-social behaviour. Whilst it would always be preferable that measures like this did not need to be taken, it's unfortunate that anti-social activity seems to make this a necessity. Hopefully we will all be able to enjoy a nicer experience as a result. We are of course having to consistently stake our claim with regard to access points which have made notable progress on.

November 2008 (3)
We would like to thank efforts made by Councillors at recent Area Meetings to raise and progress issues affecting our estate and it's residents on our behalf.

November 2008 (2)
The Arch in the Walled Gardens : Work will commence in the latter half of November to clear, clean and re-establish The Arch in the Walled Gardens. We look forward to hopefully taking back control of this area. We would ask that anyone who may be interested in "adopting" this area after we have done this work to contact us. This would simply involve keeping a "watching eye" over the area and disposal of rubbish etc into our community wheelie bins and maybe a little bit of weed clearing as required ?

November 2008 :
This month we have undertaken to regenerate the area at the gated entrance to the stables at Woodview. This area had been used as a 'useful' stopping off point up to now for 'certain people' to use as a drinking area, rubbish tip. See gallery page for some pics of the work.

Also this month, following it being notified to us, we are undertaking to tackle the issue at the Arch in the Walled Gardens. We will be liaising with the KCC on this as an ongoing item, but in the meantime we will be contracting to have the area cleared of rubbish, graffiti removed and shrubbery cleaned up. We would hope to take back 'ownership' of this area from those who seem intent on destroying it. We would hope, as shown on our 'Information' page, that we get some interested people to 'adopt' this area from then on and show these people that they are not just being 'left to it'.
